Kitchen Favorite

We have a kitchen favorite. It is the butter dish. My daughter even has a favorite brand of butter (Keller) She can tell when I buy a different brand. The butter dish sits on our counter next to the stove. It makes me smile. Last year we made one round of butter dishes (6). The only reason we made them is because I wanted one for us. To make a butter dish it is labor intensive. You throw a cylinder without a bottom. It has to stiffen up slightly before you shape it into butter shape. Once it is rectangle or oval which ever you prefer, it needs to become leather hard, which means it will hold its shape but still has water in the clay to be able to combine pieces together. It still needs a bottom. You roll out a slab of clay. This needs to dry a bit before you handle it. Once it is soft leather hard you attach the bottom. Wrap and let sit overnight so the two pieces can all become the same stiffness. This year we made two batches of three. We made them because someone asked for one with blue crabs. I love mine so much I could not say no. I took the first batch to the Farmers Market on Saturday and they SOLD OUT. QUICK! They were all sold in 2 hours.
